Image Sample Cleanup Project

Posted under General

@kuuderes_shadow First one is an incorrect source. That I can tell right off the bat, so I fixed it.

For the latter two, yes the originals are better, even at extremely slight differences.

The only exception is for Twitter png uploads as ☆♪ has mentioned in an earlier post, but those are to be replaced so as to avoid confusion.

Just passing along a few tips I figured out when uploading a larger version image.

1. Click the comment image hyper-link provided by RaisingK or myself
2. Use the Post to Danbooru bookmarklet
3. On the upload dialogue screen:
  • Use the "child:" metatag to automatically parent the smaller post
  • Use the "source:" metatag if possible/necessary to automatically set the source
    • This will work even if you upload from a different link, e.g. an image link
  • Copy/paste the tags from the smaller post
  • Ensure the rating matches as long as it was rated appropriately (howto:rate)
4. Submit

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following are optional and only apply if they exist on the original post.

5. Copy notes
  • (Builder+)
    • Go to the original post and select "Copy all notes" (under options)
    • Enter the post ID
    • Select OK
  • (Platinum-)
    • Copy all notes manually

or

    • Request a Builder+ do it (via DMail or on the forum)
6. Copy artist commentary
  • Go to the new post and select "Add artist commentary"
  • Select post in the "Copy from" drop down menu
  • Enter the post ID of the child post
  • Click Fetch
  • Click Submit
7. Replace child in pool
  • Go to the pool view by clicking the pool link
  • Click the "Edit" link
  • Find the child ID in the Posts text box
  • Replace it with the parent ID
  • Click "Update Pool"
Edit:

Updated

If there are any notes, commentaries, or pools for the child post, then those should also be copied (in the case of notes and commentaries) or transferred (in the case of pools: I go the pool and replace the child ID with parent ID to maintain the order it was added to the pool) to the parent post after submitting it.

Isn't there a way to make the bookmarklet download the full-sized image when a sample from yande.re is given ? It works when the url is in files.yande.re/jpeg/[...].jpg and upload the files.yande.re/image/[...].png but not with files.yande.re/sample/[...].jpg.

The sample is a bit tricky. When the "jpeg" is used, it's guaranteed that the full size will be a PNG, so rewriting the URL is easy. When the "sample" is used, it's unknown whether a JPG or PNG is being used, so rewriting the URL would be difficult/impossible given just the image URL.

Edit:

Created issue #2942.

Wrong thread... Also, first isn't a sample, it was revised (md5 mismatches on pixiv aren't typically samples unless they exhibit vastly smaller resolutions than the original)

But anyways, deleted the other three.

PSA: @NWF_Renim suggested in issue #2949 the ability to replace the images of existing posts, so that image samples could be updated in-place. I hacked together an implementation but there are some open questions as to how such a feature should work.

Should the uploader be changed to the person replacing the image? Should the approver change? What should be the rules as to which images should and should not be replaced? Are there any other concerns with replacing images?

Huh, that's actually pretty interesting. It didn't come to my mind that we could just have the images be replaced in-place, although I was always hoping for that sort of feature to come to fruition.

I think that the uploader should be changed to the person replacing the image. As for the approver, I'm okay with either moving the name or leaving it without, as it doesn't seem that important to me.

EDIT: This would also fix the problem of having sample uploads ruin a user's record.

How would that work in regards to the person who originally uploaded the image, would it be removed from their uploads? Or would it be attributed to two uploaders.

I imagine the former. Post records only have an approver ID and an uploader ID. It would require a lot of restructuring to facilitate more than one of either, which would be a hard sell for the Danbooru coders.

Hmm, then I suppose etiquette would be to let the original uploader decide if they want to replace their sample images themselves, if they're still active.
