Because it’s not a good tag that nobody has used or will use. Rodent was nuked for the same reason.

Rodent is much broader from a searching perspective, it is a lot less likely someone looking for rabbits wants to see rats than someone looking for snails wants to see slugs. A better comparison would be mollusk which yes is a bad tag. It was massively underused before and I suggest bringing it back to have a group tag for slugs and snails as they shouldn't be aliased but don't have a common tag. I don't know what else you would call snails and slugs together https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastropoda.

Honestly that just makes it even more useless. I can at least vaguely imagine someone searching for rodents since they often give off a similar vibe. Gastropods? Not so much. ~snail ~slug has 2060 posts as of writing.

You could always… search for either one? I refuse to believe literally anybody wants a tag to search for slugs and snails together on their anime image board except you.

Slug OR snail has a over a hundred pages of results. That's not really the attitude we have with tagging stuff with so many posts.

I think the exact opposite. Snails and slugs give a lot more similar vibes than rabbits and rats but they are also completely different things so IMO there should be a common tag. As for "gastropod" previously being nuked... there isn't really a better term.

It has exactly 103 at the default page size of 20.

That's still more than a hundred pages of results. Two tags with that many posts that are visually distinct but clearly under the same "category of thing" to most people should definitely have a common tag.

This is the issue. Most people do not care. There are five votes on the BUR as of now and none are positive. I think you would be hard-pressed to find more than five users on this site that care whether or not they can search for slugs and snails together.

We don’t make tags just because it’s technically applicable and present in the image, we make them because a majority of users might benefit from them.

Again, "who cares, this isn't anime titties" is not the attitude we have with something with this many posts.

I don’t know where you got that opinion from, but the number of posts something has does not correlate to its importance or the necessity of a parent tag. This conversation has already become unproductive, so let’s just wait for another opinion and/or more votes.

But you're right about the convo not being productive right now. I'll check tomorrow. Sorry if I came across harshly btw.

Worth noting that when this tag was nuked last time it was filled with nothing but gastrodon and slug girls apparently. That previous nuke isn't really applicable here because this proposed implication would cover real animals and actually be a proper grouping tag.

That aside I'm not exactly sure on the usefulness of this tag because there are apparently only snails and slugs which could both be searched for in a two-tag search. It's not covering a large but similar set of creatures like bug for which there are 20+ similar tags it's encapsulating. It's more unnecessary than actively bad, but I don't see much point.

Exactly, it was pretty much a case of tag getting nuked for being underused.

This is pretty much the existence of the crocodile tag while crocodile and alligator also exist. Both of which imply crocodilian and are much less visually distinct than slugs and snails. I feel like this is just a case of the word being rejected for being to "sciencey" sounding.

Well no it was nuked because it was a 4 count tag for a Terria enemy which was indiscriminately applied to hundreds of Gastrodon posts 7 years later.
I also think our crocodilian tags are a bad comparison because a crocodile and alligator are visually identical to the layman. It's probably most comparable to how we handle crows and ravens. Crocodilian isn't an umbrella tag for two similar looking animal it's replacing them because there is no point in separately tagging them.

Snails and slugs are easily distinguished by their shells though so I'm not suggesting that.
