New Feature: Embedded images in wikis

There's a new feature that allows you to put images inside wiki pages. Here's a few examples to show what I'm talking about:

• Hatsune Miku
• Takanashi Kiara
• Link! Like! Love Live!
• Toyota Supra

To add a single large image to a wiki, write this:

To add a group of thumbnail images, write this:

To add captions beneath the images, write this:

* !post #3: Captions can contain links, like this: [[Touhou]].

To add an arbitrary image that isn't from a post, first upload it, then find it on the Media Assets page, then write this:

* !asset #19734342: [[Ford Mustang II]] (1973-1978)

Now that we have this ability, we'll need to get to work updating wikis. Our first priority should be adding example images to gentag wikis, and adding things like costumes and official art to character wikis.

Here are some initial guidelines to follow when adding images in wikis:

• Don't overdo it. Don't add a bunch of images just because you can. 1-2 images that get the point across is better than 10.
• Don't put an image as the first thing in the wiki. We don't have the formatting tools to make this look good yet. Put them under an h4. Examples or h4. Official art section instead.
• Don't use !post #1234 to add large images. Use * !post #1234 to add small images instead. Large images aren't normally meant to be used for example images. They're meant to allow for things like screenshots in help wikis.
• Don't use too many separate galleries. For example, if a character has a bunch of different types of costumes, putting them all into 1 or 2 galleries may be easier to read than splitting them up into 5 different galleries with only 1 or 2 images each.
• Use images that are as safe-for-work as possible, considering the subject matter. Blacklists currently don't apply to embedded images, so they should be safe for everybody. For NSFW wikis, at least choose images that are tasteful.
• For characters, prefer official art over fanart.
• For copyrights, it's possible to include images for the core cast, but don't overdo it. Again, too many images can make wikis harder to read.
• If a piece of official art hasn't been uploaded yet, then upload it instead of just using !asset #123 to add it without uploading it.
• You can use !asset #123 to add images that aren't uploadable as actual posts. This can be used if you need to crop or edit an image to make a good example, or if you want to add a photograph or outside image to better illustrate what something looks like for gentag wikis.

To find wikis where this has been used, use this:

• /wiki_pages?search[title_or_body_matches]=*!post*
• /wiki_pages?search[title_or_body_matches]=*!asset*

This can be useful for finding more examples of how it should be done, or to make sure people are using it properly.

• For copyrights, it's possible to include images for the core cast, but don't overdo it. Again, too many images can make wikis harder to read.

For listing cast members, I'd assume it'd be decided on a case-by-case basis whether every character gets an image in the main wiki, or something like that? Link! Like! Love Live!, BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! and Yoru no Kurage wa oyogenai for example work fine with their limited cast, and it's definitely more useful to have the cast listed on the copyright's wiki, but doing the same for Idolmaster would obviously make the wiki completely unusuable.

This is something we'll have to figure out as we go. I think wikis like Link! Like! Love Live! and Yoru no Kurage wa oyogenai are okay but Akebi-chan no Serafuku is starting to push it.

They should be put in the "List of characters" page, and even there you shouldn't go too crazy. For large franchises like Pokemon, hundreds of images would make the page slow to load and probably harder to read.

The main page could potentially contain the main cast if it's a small number of characters.

Does this mean regular users are able to see pics tagged with censored tags being used as embedded images, like loli and such then?

You can only embed images that are visible to everyone. If you try to embed an image that is not visible to everyone, then it will only show a placeholder, even if you would otherwise be able to see the post.

This will definitely help us cut down on long costume descriptions.

I propose we favor images of character groups for copyright/list of characters pages whenever we can. Using Girls und Panzer as an example, we can have one post for the Ooarai Girls Academy characters, another for the St. Gloriana characters, and so on. The captions can include "(from left to right)" or similar wording together with a list of the characters appearing in the post.

We'd need a balance between image count and group size. We don't want a large amount of solo images, but we also don't want a single post with hundreds of characters.

• If a piece of official art hasn't been uploaded yet, then upload it instead of just using !asset #123 to add it without uploading it.

What if the only official art that can be found doesn't meet Danbooru's quality standards? Should we still upload it instead of keeping it as an asset? Or should we use good quality fanart in those cases?

In those cases it would be linked as an asset, but in practice I doubt it'd be very common.

I added images to the JoJo Pose wiki. Didn't find any good preexisting posts with them so I found these at the Jojo wiki. They're just media assets now, though I'm wondering if sources to them should be included somewhere:

I've been doing some experimenting with the Sousou no Frieren wiki and it's great that a lot of work was already done on the official Frieren homepage when it comes to character art. Now I just need to fill in the missing images with official art.

Some possible suggestions for the idea pile:

• More text sizes for the captions. I'm not asking for full DText support, but the default size is (I think) the same size as the normal [tn] text and if the caption is just a character name, it feels needlessly small. So the ability to choose between the normal text size and the current small size would be great.

• Changing the link of the embedded image. Taking list of sousou no frieren characters as an example: If you now click on a portrait you are led to the corresponding media_assets page which is a bit counterintuitive. You have to click on the small text with their names to access their pages (see previous point). Letting the thumbnail use the first link in a caption, or an override to set it manually would be nice.

• A zoom-to-fill option. Looking at uss enterprise (star trek) with the listed Enterprise variants, the thumbnail areas are perfect squares but the images aren't which makes them all uneven. Adding an option to blow up these images up until they fill the square would be a great way make them all look even without having to download them, editing them, and upload them again as media assets. And I KNOW that there are people here that would go through this effort just because they want them to look neat.

• Even better would be a way to zoom-to-fit and an option to anchor them. If we take akebi-chan no serafuku, the images are basically too small with a lot of wasted space because they show the entire body of the characters. When people are searching to identify characters they are interested in their faces, so blowing these images up until they fill the square and setting an option to anchor them from the top would solve this and save a lot of time for the person making the wiki.

• An option to move the caption to the right. If size constraints are limiting readability and longer captions are needed, moving the caption to the right could allow for more/larger text. Think of "Tile" view in folders on Windows. On normal landscape monitors it could behave like

I think all copyright wikis (or list of characters wikis) should use character previews. May be inside the [expand] if there are more than 10 characters on the page.

When you're looking for a character whose name you don't know, it's much easier to watch a preview than to open 100 pages.
