That actually explained the joke for me. I think "but" should be removed from last bubble if that's the case, like "OK, we got the hint".
Not sure about Japan, in ancient China Empire they use a special needle to test it. If it contain poison it will turn black(probably oxidised). Some Chinese culture were brought to Japan so maybe the poison test were also brought to there.

yep it's pure silver and there are some other ways... Like the tester who usualy an eunuch ( i dont really know the exact english word but he had his testicle cut off) will drink a little bit from the cup. btw to be clear i'm an asian but not chinese
