More like Shinmyoumaru and Reimu are hunting Flan and Remilia together (since Shinmyoumaru's ancestor exterminated an oni, and in Gensokyo oni and vampires are somewhat "related")

I thought it was just because the Japanese word for vampire (吸血鬼) had the character for oni (鬼) in it.

I initially thought the whole bean thing was related to that old saying: Throw some beans/fennel/poppy seeds behind you while a vampire is pursuing you and it'll be compelled to go and pick them up.

It's not so much pick them up as they are compelled to count them, hence The Count from Sesame Street.
