While he was leading the team of industrial chemists tasked with developing an antiknock additive for gasoline in the 19teens, Thomas Midgley experimented for a while with using compounds of tellurium, and ended up smelling so bad for so long that his wife banished him to the basement of their house. Anything that stuff touches reeks for months, including people. (Midgley's team eventually settled on lead tetraethyl, which worked a treat and didn't make smelly exhaust... but was, y'know, lead, so not exactly ideal.)
