I really like it as a kind of ironically cute holdover ship characteristic, it's like when an animal character transforms into a human but still has the ears & tail, except because they're ships it's size. Plus if the time I lived in Nagoya is any indication, Japanese women over 6' tall aren't as vanishingly rare as most people assume.

Yeah, I have my doubts. 6'5" (the artist's official height) is a full 6 standard deviations above the average height for a Japanese woman. That would make them taller than 99.9999999% of women, and given Japan's population of 125 million, it is statistically unlike for there to be even one woman that tall in the whole country (barring exceptions like gigantism).
