A male Humboldt penguin who lived at Tobu Zoo in Saitama Prefecture. Became famous on the internet for his interactions with a cardboard cutout of Kemono Friends' Humboldt Penguin character, prompting many to consider the penguin a friend of hers, a secret admirer, or being hopelessly in love with her while being stuck in the third dimension.
He was distinguishable from other Humboldt penguins by the purple armband on his left flipper.
According to zoo staff, Grape used to have a wife called Midori (distinguished from her green (= midori) flipper band), but at some point she abandoned Grape and found a new lover -- a rather exceptional occurrence in a species that usually forms lifelong pair bonds. Perhaps this is the reason why Grape fell in love with Hululu, a tragic story indeed.
Grape-kun passed away on October 12, 2017. He was 21 years old.
