alias namesake -> name_connection

Posted under Tags

I think we need is a separate implication rather than alias: "namesake" for obvious namesakes (same personal name or nickname) and "name connection" for part-namesakes and unrelated characters with similar surnames.

I have pretty big doubts that our users would care enough to distinguish between "same name connection" and "similar name connection". It sounds like one of those distinctions that only work if nobody is using those tags.

If someone is willing to put on the effort to garden the 5k posts under namesake to make a distinction between the concepts then I suppose there's no harm in trying it, otherwise there's not much point: if tag gardeners can't be arsed then neither can the average user.

Another problem with the namesake tag to justify it being aliased is that it's often used wrong most of the time. by the meaning of the term. A namesake means a person is named after another i.e. as a homage or a reference to them, but most examples are just characters that happen to share a name. A connection, if you will, much like trait_connection. In fact, looking at the related tags in the trait_connection wiki, namesake is clearly an odd one among color connection, company connection, voice actor connection, etc.

Not necessarily. If you check any dictionary you'll find that the word also includes sharing the same name without having to be named as a homage or reference to the other.

I don't think we need to overcomplicate this. The tag is just for jokes or references based on two characters from different franchises having the same name. And I think the term "namesake" does strongly suggest a person who is named after someone else, not just two people who happen to have the same name.
