Unified tag alias thread

Posted under General

Just a thought I had, but: is it really necessary to have a separate thread for every alias? For the most part all we need is for jxh or someone to see the thread and nod in agreement. It really clutters up the forum, without doing much actual good in my opinion.

Maybe it's worth exploring the idea of either having a designated tag alias thread (and the "tag alias suggestion" script just makes a new post in that thread), or a subforum of some kind?

Sorry if this has already been suggested and/or discussed!

EDIT: Implications could go there too, of course.

I think what we'd find is that a single thread for aliases will get too cluttered up, especially when 2-3 or more different people propose different alias and each alias gets a lot of discussion. The intermixing of different discussions into one thread would make it hard and annoying trying to see what each persons' thoughts are on a particular proposed alias. To compound it you'll then have people proposing completely unrelated new alias and implications in the middle of discussions which can generate their own discussions. Unless there was someone to monitor it and quickly pull large discussions out of the thread, it's just going to be too messy.

Further thinking upon it, having it in such a thread would do nothing but cause tag proposals to easily be lost. Unlike for example the pointless wiki or plural to singular threads, where jxh would just check off things and the chronological order doesn't matter. What can and will happen is that some proposals are going to be "we'll need more discussion on this," so jxh can't just put a post saying "gotten all up to here," because there will be things that will be continuing and some that aren't continuing discussion. Unless he leaves a rolling list with each of his posts of all the active proposals, you're going to end up getting some lost in the mess (and not mention that for each one left open you're going to have a horrible time digging back through all the other posts to find relevant material).

The subforum though would work better.

Please keep aliases and implications on a thread by thread basis (with some exceptions for the simpler themed threads e.g. artists or pixiv aliases) as we have.

The best way for me to keep track of what I've done is whether or not I've commented in the thread. I would never, ever be able to keep straight a single thread with a million discussions going on at once.

And yeah it's clutter, but it's like 85% of the reason the forum exists so I don't think that matters.

Additionally, forum search becomes worthless when something is buried on page 34 of a huge thread.

Lastly, albert has coded something in such that when people submit through the form one at a time, a handy "[create]" link appears where I can just click that and be brought to the alias/implication page with the tags already entered (avoiding copy/paste and potential errors) with an automatic "See forum #----" in the Reason field. Of course I will edit it if the initial proposal needs to be changed, but that's not a big deal.

The way I do forum catch-up right now is to simply open a tab for every forum thread I haven't read and go through them one by one. Yes, things I can't reach a conclusion on right away sometimes get lost but that'd happen a lot more in a single thread. The Pointless Pools thread, for example, is just a nightmare to deal with. Doing that with all aliases and implications would be worse.

Alright, I can see the unified thread was definitely not a good idea. But the subforum separation for this stuff is still potentially good. For one, is this really the main reason for the forum? It seems to me more like it's hijacking the forum.

Threads I was following regularly get bumped all the way to the second or third page because of these alias requests (of which it's incredibly rare that I have anything to say on the subject). We used to have discussions here but I often can't find the real threads for the alias suggestions nowadays, and I end up just hitting the deletion appeals and then going "fuck it, maybe next time". I can't be the only one who is like this... Well, probably.

Of course, we don't have any subforums right now so it might be kind of a pipe dream...

Hijacking? Settling matters of tagging policy is exactly the point of the forums. Other than aliases and implications and the discussions that emerge from them, there's not that much else that goes on here.

You have the established pool/wiki/appeal/feedback etc threads which are all linked in the Useful Links thread and then... I dunno, the occasional suggestion of a new tag, failbooru complaints, and new feature requests. All of which account for a small number of threads in absolute numbers.

Basically, I see these forums as pretty much a issue tracker system with an ability for multiple people to discuss the issue.

I don't have a problem with subforums, but I assume the reason why we don't have them is because albert was keeping the forum code as simple as possible.

And if you wanna find where the actual link to the alias submission page that Log linked to is, you can find it by clicking the 'Tags' link at the top of the page, and then navigating to the 'Aliases' or 'Implications' page. Each'll have an 'Add' link that takes you to an alias/implication submission page.
