Tag alias
Here is the wiki of erect_nipples

"For Danbooru purposes, this tag refers to when erect nipples are visible through clothing. Different from but not mutually exclusive with seethrough."

(the wiki was written in 2006)

Reason for the alias

I don't think the name "erect nipples" is good enough for that purpose. I get the impression that "erect nipples" refers to nipples that are erect. (which, depending on the definition of "erect", may be covered by other tags anyway)

P. S.:

Here is the list of posts that I found tagged erect nipple that disobey that wiki. My search was erect_nipples nipples.

And, here are some borderline cases:

All this tag needs is a cleanup. Any tag can be misused and minor misuse is not a compelling reason to change it. You found 32 mistagged images in 75 pages of erect nipples.

There were 9 pages, not 75. Don't forget "id:>900000". Without it, there would be 106 pages.

"Any tag can be misused and minor misuse is not a compelling reason to change it." is true. However, major misuse of a tag in a way that its name technically allows is a compelling reason to change it as visibly confusing.

If, hypothetically, we decided that book is only for open books, and 2 years later there were hundreds of closed books with that tag as well, then I'd probably request some change.

Please note that, while I criticize the wisdom of many tags here, I don't do the same for the huge majority tags I know, misused or not. The ones I create threads for are special cases.

I'm linking this because you didn't bother to search for it. forum #26922

In that thread, I did not find anything new and important for this thread.

Please don't expect I'd mention that thread here just because its subject is similar.

And yes, the wiki isn't clear enough on nipples that they should be visible.

This flaw of the wiki of nipples could be easily fixed, though.

It should be pointed out that quantity of images that may misuse a tag isn't necessarily a good indicator on whether or not there really is a major or minor misuse of a tag by the user population. Quantity of images misusing a tag may very well reflect the actions of a small minority of users who are very active as opposed to a less active majority. One user alone who is dedicated can easily cause a major change in quantity in the use of a tag, but that would not reflect major misuse of the tag by the population of users as a whole.

Not sure I see a flaw in logic, but then again I admit I am rather tired as I try and look this over. Is it on the use of the tag search? A nipples erect_nipples tag search's results pulls up 3 types of images. Two of these are misusing a tag and are either tagging exposed nipples that are erect or they're tagging covered nipples. In the former case they're misusing the erect_nipples tag, but in the latter case they're misusing the nipples tag. The 3rd type of image pulled up by this search are images that are correctly tagged. These images are those that depict either one character with exposed nipples and one with covered nipples whose shape is visible through the clothing. Another correct usage may be a single character who has one exposed breast and one covered breast with a visible nipple shape. In short this tag result doesn't pull up simply misuses of the erect_nipples tag, but also pulls up misuses of the nipples tag, and correct uses of both tags.

It should be noted that monitoring and gardening tags requires a lot of effort and is a time consuming process, and it is very easy miss things, especially when people edit older images. It is very easy for people to misuse a tag and it be overlooked, especially when a tag is heavily populated.

As for naming, a clothed_nipples or clothed_erect_nipples may run into a naming issue in that the name itself implies the that nipples are covered by clothing, as opposed to items such a bed sheets, towels, ribbons, etc. It is true that erect_nipples sounds ambiguous and may cause misuse if you don't look at the wiki, but if it did get aliased to another tag it is quite likely that those who do not bother to look up the definition of a tag may also not bother to correct tag mistakes when they upload the image and the tag appears as a different tag.

As for removing the clothed stipulation on the erect_nipples tag, I agree with what Moose said "Problem with that solution is that there's hardly a difference with nipples and exposed erect nipples."

The name was just a suggestion. It could easily be changed to something like covered_nipples or whatever.

It's not always a matter of being too lazy to look up a wiki. I assume most people would think that a tag like erect_nipples just means erect nipples, so why bother? So it's not always going to be someone who's just so aloof they don't realize what they're really doing. I know I've even learned what a counter intuitive tag really meant only to forget it after not using it for a while and wound up misusing it again.

If we expect people to use tags properly we should try to make them as easy to use as possible, and the best way to do that is to use names that make sense. There wouldn't be such a need to monitor tags if everyone easily understood what they meant.

I'll admit though that there's not much point in tagging erect nipples unless they actually are clothed, though. If it's not seeing that much misuse I guess it's fine, but I don't really like the arguments behind counter-intuitive tag names.

True. See clothed navel for comparison to my initial clothed nipples, but I'd probably support any good name.

+1 for that.

EDIT:

Added my reply about "clothed navel", above.
