Feature suggestion: mass tagging

Posted under Bugs & Features

I noticed in post #93771 that the pools are going to be replaced with a single tag and to do that users/mods/whoever needs to go through the images one by one and apply a tag.
Why is this not a button or some small form? If you're deleting pools and replacing them with tags that often, why is it not streamlined? It's fairly simple to design and execute, and a small database query could modify hundreds of posts without the need to tediously edit each and every single one of them.
I don't know the exact extent of mod/admin/janitor needs, so I can see three options:

  • "Add tag(s) to pool" option, which applies tag(s) X to all posts in pool Y
  • "Replace pool with tag(s)" option, which applies tag(s) X to all posts in pool Y and deletes the pool
  • "Arbitrary mass tag(s)" option, which applies tag(s) X to all search results for Y

First, you meant to say forum #93771.

Now, I'm already aware of tag scripts and I use them all the time. But in the case of those specific pools I need to actually look at every single image one-by-one to tell which tags need to be added (which you would know if you had read topic #9791). Tag scripts do not help very much with this.

If I could apply a tag to all images in a pool without even needing to look at the posts then I would use tag scripts to do it significantly faster. And I do use them for most pool -> tag conversions. But in this case that doesn't work out.

And note that moderators and admins have a "mass-edit" feature that lets them apply tags even quicker than with tag scripts, and is basically exactly the feature you're describing (but more versatile).
