What's our stance on twitter samples?

Posted under General

Well, there were quite a few good posts, but not all of them...

So what I'll probably end up doing is uploading all of the posts I feel comfortable with quality-wise from my regular account, and then all of the borderline posts from a member-level account.

Keep in mind that if "Twitter version" are uploaded earlier than the "Pixiv/Seiga version", it's best to just parent them to the one with best quality. All of these Twitter uploads are happened because of the uncertainty that surrounds every Pixiv/Seiga artists. You see, sometimes artist uploads a work only in Twitter, and don't upload it on Pixiv/Seiga/etc. But, we as uploader don't have any way to know which pics that will be uploaded later on Pixiv/Seiga and which pics that stays on Twitter. That's why, if someone uploads a "Twitter version" but several hours later the "Pixiv/Seiga version" emerges, the fairest way possible is to just parent it to the better version.

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that if there does exist a better pixiv/seiga version etc with no noticeable difference, then why upload the full Twitter version in the first place anyway? I'm of the same thought as brokeneagle in this regard. I would just flag the Twitter sample and not reupload the full Twitter version since there's already a raw, optimized/uncompressed version of it upped.

That's how I look at it, too.
No need for a Twitter version with the same resolution (or less) and no visual differences as an already existing Pixiv post, because Pixiv > Twitter. That said: Flagging the Twitter Sample in that case, but don't reupload the Twitter version. It would get flagged, because of inferiour quality than already existing post.

Yeah. On the other hand there is the situation where the full twitter version comes first, but a topic for that is already opened: topic #12743

That being said, I do sometimes see some builders with unlimited uploads upload the twitter version after without realizing there's already a better version, and then they just parent it as if the twitter version was uploaded before. I'm not one to complain, but if you look through something like source:http://twitter.com/ parent:any it's happened here and there.

EDIT: Also, since the unrestricted flagging for contributors isn't implemented yet, can we start that temporary "flagging samples" thread so Janitors+ can clean up stuff? I'll go through a bunch of twitter samples or md5 mismatches and try to get a bunch of stuff done for today.

Would be nice if there could be shared some other opinions, too. I don't like talking to myself :3.

Anyway that's OT.

Oh I see. If the better version is already exist, then there is no point to upload the Twitter version, except there are revisions on it.

Ugh, having said that, I uploaded the full-size Tumblr picture (post #2583957) without checking, and later found a higher resolution on Pixiv (post #2583961)... *DOH!* >__<

Should the Tumblr version be flagged, or should it be left as is...?

When I do this I started flagging the duplicate. Not required but it just seems courteous to me.

Also on this topic, it really annoys me how little people utilize the duplicate tag! It's one I like to have blacklisted...

I was thinking that would be a good idea, but I'm not sure who can do that other than admins or moderators... It's beyond my knowledge for now, but I know for certain I may have favorited some samples.

Every user with approval permissions is able to do this.

DeviantArt is a bit dangerous to handle, because sometimes you see that a post has a higher resolution. But you can only link an image with lower resolution, because there is no download button. It is a it strange there.

Yes, they do. Also some samples have watermarks. The URL structure looks like this:

The URLs are relatively simple, except BCY work pages can be galleries containing multiple images, so you have to be able to deal with that.
