Image Sample Cleanup Project

Mmm... I don't think it can be helped. The other users that I know of that have taken big hits in deletion count include Shallotte, D1ce, and Qpax, but I don't think that means they're bad uploaders at all. Just that numbers are deceiving.

Yes. This is actually really a thing that doesn't look when looking at the profile :/.
I wonder if we should exclude sample images from the deleted list, because those images are (mostly) not deleted for quality. And the deleted section should count exactly that.

-1 Not a big fan of that. It needlessly complicates the code, plus anyone worth there salt should not be using just the deleted statistic as an indication of quality.

Yeah, probably. It would still be better to have a more transparent statistic in any regardm but I guess then you just use user:Provence status:deleted -image_sample (that stupid water_tap .-.). That is also only important for the moderators in most cases. So I think you're right.

^ I don't think that'll be the only problem either...

A worse case is if there's suddenly no penalty for uploading samples, and then users treat it as a no-risk way of checking if a post will get approved or not.

And besides, Eagle has a point -- the number of deletions is pretty deceiving as an indicator of quality. Someone could just be uploading posts that are almost always safe approvals in the queue (pool posts, manga) but that doesn't quite say anything about their measure of quality when they don't have a very wide diversity of artists or sources to upload from.

It is pretty complex though. Users shouldn't fear uploading from ArtStation anymore since the bookmarklet/upload page has been fixed for those sites, but it's still probably a concern given how many flagged samples there are now.

I just created the tag yandere sample. This is another potential image sample to stress over. One important point however is I believe I may have seen Yande.re upscale images from sources such as Pixiv. I will attempt to confirm this. On the Danbooru side I think uploading from this source there could be some automatic changes to the source in the same manner as Twitter, ArtStation, Pixiv, et al.

I can probably whip something up that checks for Yandere samples in a couple of days...

At least with stable source like that, I'm not anticipating any MD5 mismatches, although there could potentially be bad ID's (not deleted, but expunged)...

So I'm about 50% through Yandere, and there are already ~1500 samples... {yandere_sample}

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the images marked with image sample have original images that are PNG's, and could probably qualify for the pool PNG Overkill (pool #223), without offering any increase in image dimensions, and probably limited increase in actual image quality...

See the below comment listing for an easy to see comparison of filesizes and dimensions:
http://danbooru.donmai.us/comments?group_by=comment&search[creator_id]=23799&search[body_matches]=*Yandere*

What are the thoughts on this? Should these be uploaded regardless (i.e. treated like other image samples), or should some guidelines be established...?

Edit:

Updated language in 2nd paragraph to clarify that many image samples have originals with PNG's

Updated

@EB would be a good person to comment on Yandere... maybe you can explain what the deal is with Yandere upscaling because I never understood it.

Obviously though Yandere uploads that are reups from Pixiv, ArtStation, or other sources should probably not be marked as samples.

These guidelines from howto:upload may have some relevance:

Generally Rejected

Images with large file sizes without a good reason. When Danbooru receives a large file, we expect it to be a large print-quality poster-size illustration with hairline details. However, many images with large file sizes have been simply blurry scans saved in 24-bit PNG format.

Are those guidelines even relevant anymore first of all, and do we consider Yandere in general to be a hairline quality board or will there need to be discernment for each post?

I assume you are talking about the original images here? The "samples" are all JPEG. And in my opinion, we should not be accepting images that were lossily compressed by another site. Having the original lossless image is much more important than filesize savings (which can be done by the user after they have saved it if they want. The reverse cannot be done). I think the entire idea behind the PNG Overkill pool is bad and have always been in support of getting rid of it (it's been redundant with huge filesize for a while now anyway).

I agree with this, I don't see a reason for the pool. It seems to discourage high file size uploads. So does the blurb I quoted from howto:upload.

Since this is another imageboard: Should we flag posts with a bad yandere id?

Although I've to say that their del. reasons are a bit..weird :<.

I'd say no... many of the posts were deleted because they were duplicates....
