What are company tags for when they’re not used with company_connection or for company logos in an image? I couldn’t find related forum discussions and the wiki articles have lots of Wikipedia-style information but nothing on tag usage.
Almost no post in ~capcom ~snk ~nintendo ~marvel -company_connection has a logo somewhere. That’s a non-exhaustive list of company tags; I just saw those most often.
Well for some of those at least, it's not exactly clear what copyright to put them under. The comic book heroes really fall prey to this. As an example, just recently I had a Captain America picture, and I didn't know what the default series that he fell under, so I just added the Marvel tag.
However, if we can clear up those dis-ambiguities, I would have no problem to restricting the use of company tags to the fore-mentioned occurrence of company connection or logos.
For the Captain America example, I'm not sure Avengers or one of the movies is right unless the pictures specifically alludes to one of those. Therefore, we may need a Marvel universe or Marvel (series) tag to cover these kinds of images. Same for DC, i.e. DC universe or DC (series).
This sorting needs to be done I believe for many of the characters under the above-mentioned company names.
Currently, the Captain America wiki has the Marvel tag in it, which shows up when you do a related tags search, which is why I added it. If #1 gets sorted, then those bad tag entries should probably be removed and the correct entries should be added. Though, just the tags themselves need to be removed. The text can remain there. It can even be highlighted if needed by making the text bold like this.
So in a sense, each of the company's wiki pages would function like one of the list_of_* wiki pages.
I get the problem of what copyright to put some characters under, but I’m still confused mainly about Capcom and SNK. I see them getting tagged whenever one of the company’s copyrights is tagged. I see a few users, seemingly hell-bent on getting all the fighting games tagged with the company tags. For example, someone adds Fatal Fury and SNK even there’s no mention of SNK anywhere and company connection doesn’t apply either. Should the company tags be used like that?
Based on the general consensus of topic #13160, I'm going to say no, company tags shouldn't be used simply because they own a copyright. If someone wants to search for Fatal Fury images, they don't search for SNK; they search for Fatal Fury.
I think the only way to prevent these tags from being spammed is to rename them in a way that that makes them impossible to misuse. Nintendo should be split into something like nintendo (hardware), nintendo (logo), nintendo (staff) (for real life Nintendo employees), and nintendo (crossover) (for crossovers between Nintendo franchises), then have list of nintendo copyrights and list of nintendo characters wikis listing all Nintendo-related copyrights/characters. Nintendo itself would become a disambiguation page.
Other company tags would be split up in similar ways. This might be somewhat cumbersome, granted, but I think bare company tags like Nintendo / Capcom / Marvel are doomed to misuse as long as we have them.

I don't see how this achieves that, it just looks like they had to be qualified for ambiguity.
