10/3: Scheduled downtime for server migrations

Posted under General

I will be taking the site down for a few hours on October 3 to migrate the servers to a new data center. I anticipate this starting at around 11 AM Pacific Time and will probably last 3-4 hours.

I don't have any strong confidence that capacity will be better at this new data center, but at the very least I'll be able to add additional servers so eventually things will get better.

There's a small chance things will blow up and I will have to abort the migration, so once the maintenance period starts don't expect anything you upload or post to be preserved until I say the migration is officially done.

This part worries me, the whole site can vanish?

I don't think he meant the entire site and all its data would go *poof!*.

He just meant that people might want to -- from the start of the migration, and until the site is officially proclaimed to be stable -- reconsider spending significant time and effort uploading/tagging/translating/etc, on the off-chance that the site'd have to be rolled-back to the state it was in just before the migration was started.

To prevent that, why not just let the site display a "down for maintenance" message or switch it to read-only?

Literally his first sentence was that he would take the site down during the migration.

And as I read, he meant that after the migration is done, he would open the site for running.
But if it blows up, he will have to abort the migration, aka roll back everything to before the migration.
This means anything done to the site after opening again until he says it's over (meaning when it's confirmed to be stable), people shouldn't be doing much of anything.
On the off chance something bad happens, that is.

Many of the uploads after the transition have apparently been corrupted or otherwise just don't display anything. A quick look at the "Posts" shows about 3/4ths of all uploads have no image or thumbnail.

Well, unless this will be fixed automatically afterwards, it might warrant restricting uploads somehow. Otherwise we'll have a ton of images that need replacement.

Yeah, not sure if Albert is even aware of it but probably not.

Adding to that, when I first logged in all posts on the front page were okay. I looked at this forum then came back and some were missing thumbnails either replaced with the tag text or a small blue square. I refreshed again and several images thumbnail came back, but some are still missing. Not sure if this info helps anyone.
