Regarding using japanese names over english names

Posted under Tags

So, since the beginning of time Danbooru has used japanese names as tags. I personally think that this rule is kinda outdated: I don't really know about anime, but a lot of games usually have the japanese names either untouched, translated or localized. Since the english version is usually more famous than the japanese version (if the english version came out at the same time as the japanese version), i think that there should be an addendum to the ''using japanese names over english names'' rule: ''If the english localization came out at the same time as the japanese version, the english version should be used''. This is mainly because of consistency: some games have both english and japanese name tags (example: Fire Emblem has half japanese names half english, and i personally think this is unacceptable). topic #15691 is an example of why using translated names over unofficial romaji is a good thing (example: the unofficial romaji according to Danbooru rules of the character Elisanne should be Erufirisu, which doesn't really roll off the tongue).

On anime: I think japanese names are better in this case, since most of the time localization isn't made by the company that made the anime.

Japanese names are preferred simply because they're the most consistent. Localizations can change over time and sometimes even diverge within english speaking regions, so using Japanese makes things simpler.

The site isn't fully consistent about this, or most things really, because tags are just created by regular guys, not a trained task force. Ultimately, tags need to be curated by people who have a vested interest in them, so if there's a confusion with Fire Emblem tags then those guys need to work it out.

And for the record, Elisanne's JP name is Elphyllis. Whether that's better or not isn't our concern.

I'm willing to go through everything for this reason, but first i'd like to know what's the general opinion on them, so i know i'm not going to waste time.

FE from 6 onwards have had the english and japanese release come out around at the same time. Since the english names are more well-known, i think we should go with them.

If, by "go through everything", you mean submit alias requests so that everyone else gets a chance to comment on proposed changes before anything happens, that's fine. Just don't start changing well-established tags on your own without first showing the forum exactly what it is you intend to change, because that's a time-honored technique for provoking the torches-and-pitchforks crowd around here.

Should i first make a forum post for discussing the submission before submitting? Didn't that work the other way around (eventual errors/unwanted things get edited out of the submission)?

Yeah it's fine to make the BULK update first and then discuss, it's much easier to make decisions when it's all laid out in front of you.
