Covered Navel -> Navel Implication

Posted under Tags

I wanted to have a discussion about covered navel and navel. Currently, the former does not imply that latter, which confused me as I was tagging posts. Even though the navel is covered, if it's prominently defined in the art, it's still a navel, for example post #4205484, post #4198150, post #4205325, post #4189118 and many leotard, bodystocking and competition swimsuit posts . Is there any reason why the two tags are separated like they are? People can always search navel -covered_navel to get only posts with exposed navels. There are currently 1,286 posts tagged with navel covered_navel solo, so clearly some people are manually adding in navel with covered_navel. See post #4148693, post #4147885 and post #4170535 which are tagged with both navel and covered navel. I don't see any difference between the posts I listed earlier, which were tagged just with covered_navel, and the 3 after which are tagged with both.

There's a similar case with collarbone and covered collarbone, where the latter doesn't imply the former.

That would exclude lots of images of characters with uncovered navels if another character in the image happened to have a covered navel. Not at all ideal for someone who wants to search for them.

I always assumed that covered_navel was supposed to follow the same logic as covered_nipples. You wouldn't tag nipples unless they're visible, e.g., through wet clothing, so why would you tag a navel that isn't visible?

The wiki's wording seems to agree with this interpretation, as jxh pointed out in topic #9456. Navel suggests that it should be used with tags like nude and midriff, both of which would indicate that the navel is exposed, not clothed. It then goes on to say that we should contrast the tag with covered_navel, which is quite the opposite of using both tags at once.

People who don't care about whether navels are exposed or not can always search for ~covered_navel ~navel.

I would venture to say that most of those posts are mistagged. At any rate, they don't demonstrate the need for an implication any more than the hundreds of cameltoe pussy solo posts demonstrate the need for a cameltoe -> pussy implication.
