alias hair_tousle -> ruffling_hair

Rather neutral on the change, but wouldn't having it as hair_tousle make it easier for searching? There are no other ruffling_* tags, and with autocomplete they're more likely to find hair_tousle because it follows other hair_* tags. It might be better simply aliasing ruffling_hair to hair_tousle instead.

Agreed

The issue is that because the term "ruffle" is so much more prevalent nobody is searching for a tag with "tousle" in it, which means that even if it is in the hair_* autocomplete users still won't find it.

Also you are correct that there are no other ruffling_* tags, but there are already several *_hair tags for performing actions on hair such as cutting_hair, tying_hair and washing_hair. ruffling_hair would be consistent with these tags.

I didn't even know "tousle" was a real word until I accidentally stumbled into the tag

I'm fine with making these things easier, but I do want to avoid us dumbing down the vocabulary used in our tags to the point where we're using tags like "titfuck" simply to avoid making people learn new words. (edit: And no, I'm not saying this specific case is doing that, just in general.)

Updated

after thinking about it more, my only reservation is that this seems to be a narrowing of the scope of the tag,

current wiki for tousle:

The act of messing with one's (or another's) hair.

since 'messing with' could mean anything, there's currently many usages of tousle which are very subtle such as post #774989 , post #3606271 , post #725746 , post #1712844

'ruffling' sounds like a more significant action than would apply to these; dictionary examples:

• She affectionately ruffled his hair with her hand as she passed.
• The birds ruffled their feathers (up) in alarm.

so if we go through with this i really think the current usages will need to be sifted manually, moving these subtle hair-touching/fiddling instances to a different more appropriate tag

It's an older policy, but we used to try to model tags as actions-as-nouns with the object as a descriptive prefix like head tilt rather than tilted head or shirt lift instead of lifting shirt, we have a number of "Ving N" tags too (mostly holding tags), but I think prioritizing the former might make sense. This can also help with lookup and autocorrect so "hair tousle" shows up with other "hair" tags. No real strong preference here, but I'd lean against this. Hair ruffle would fit the pattern too, but that sounds too much like some sort of physical frill or something like that.

I'm neutral on ruffling vs tousling, they're synonyms to me.

As I mentioned in forum #182189, I think using the noun form for actions is a bad idea. It comes from the belief that since most tags on Danbooru are nouns, all tags should be nouns. Except it doesn't work. If we did this for everything, we would end up with tags like hair adjusting or hair holding instead of adjusting hair or holding hair, which is obvious nonsense. It's impossible to fit everything into this form and it makes for tortured English when we try.

The other problem is that the "noun_verbing" form is more limited. It allows no distinction between self vs other. Look at how we started off with hair brushing, but ended up with brushing another's hair anyway because hair brushing allows no distinction between brushing own hair and brushing another's hair. We've had to rework a bunch of tags like this that used the "noun_verbing" form because they were too ambiguous or not expressive enough. Ass grab versus grabbing own ass / grabbing another's ass is another example.
