Been doing some searched based on sock colours and I keep getting irrelevant items where boots, skirts and pants of the searched colour turned up instead. I had a closer look and apparently each coloured sock term - "red_socks", "grey_socks" etc. - redirects to "red_legwear" etc. ?????? You can't search with language that vague.

What you're finiding sounds like mistags that should be fixed. Pants, skirts and boots are not legwear and so should not have that tag.

I initially typed up a response to this about how pants, shoes etc. ARE legwear, since they are worn *on the leg* - but then I decided to check a dictionary, and actually legwear does refer specifically to hosiery, such as socks and stockings and not trousers.
Really this is a weakness in ordinary english tbh. New users or ESOLs will continue to mistag, because legwear really sounds like it applies to the lot. I feel we should change the term to the more clear "hosiery", or split it to "socks" and "stockings" since those are separate items.
Just from the first 9 pages. And I'm searching with my usual tags and blacklists, so there could be artwork with males in them etc. as well. Approaching one mistagged entry PER PAGE.
I would also consider the following: post #4352472 post #4267640 As examples where a socks/stockings (or better a socks/tights split) would help.
post #4410353 is correct, those are thighhighs/thigh boots and so they should be tagged with red legwear since they cover the legs. post #4352472 is a pantyhose and post #4267640 are thighhighs, so those should be tagged red legwear too. I've fixed the rest.

Some really good examples for the split proposal: post #2166595 post #1476094 Someone after socks would NOT want these turning up in the tag.
And an absolute motherload from a comic series beginning here: post #344141 12 pages total, no red socks or tights. For a grand total of 29 mistags across a *26* page category. Yikes. Characters like Mokou are a big magnet for this, owing to the ambiguous nature of their baggy pants-things. "Legwear" seems like a perfect fit.

For #4410353, now you are using the ultra-broad definition, bigger than the dictionary one of just hosiery. Someone after say, yellow hats, shouldn't get yellow shoes because they're both tagged under "yellow garment" only.
For the other two, you didn't read my post - it's a case for the proposed split so that socks and tight searches don't clash.

Well, we have a yellow headwear and a yellow legwear tag. And then you refine with kneehighs, helmet, or whatever else you want.

They don't. Just search pantyhose, thighhighs, or socks.
If you're also trying to search for anything else, no.
What, specifically, are you looking for? Because it sounds like you're specifically looking for pictures of red socks. Which is achievable with red_legwear + socks.
Precisely, hence the case for the same for socks/stockings etc..
Socks, items worn over the feet, and footless stockings, items worn over everywhere other than the feet, clash 100%.
Irrelevant.
Umbrella tags work exclusively with specific subtags. They're just vague, ergo weak, without them.
So you want the creation of a specific umbrella tag that is specifically for hosiery and leggings, such as socks, stockings, pantyhose, kneehighs, etc.?
Or do you want to axe pants and other forms of other non-skin level legwear from the legwear tag?
I can't say I support either. As someone with a stocking/pantyhose/thighhigh fetish, I've never had trouble finding what I'm looking for, even if I restrict myself to two tags. I guess if I restrict myself to two tags and specifically try to search out one single color and then also wanted to avoid skirts, pants, etc., there could be some difficulty. But I can get that, or a majority of it, by doing red_legwear bottomless.

That would help, although I would prefer simply specifics for each one. Socks from leggings is the top concern, but seperating them all from shoes and skirts and such is the bigger concern. Note that this is not "a" tag, as the problem affects all the current coloured legwear terms. As it is, the uncoloured terms are fine since socks, shoes, skirts etc. all exist independently.
Or do you want to axe pants and other forms of other non-skin level legwear from the legwear tag?
Impossible, since people evidently do consider those items legwear and will continue to tag them under the label. User nonamethanks demonstrates this. As explained, an umbrella term is great with its specific "vane" terms for precision beneath it, so the generic coloured legwear tags will become a blessing once we have specifics without redirects in place. Easiest thing to do since catching the prolific errors would be sisyphean.

Well in my experience, searches for just "socks", "thigh-highs", "pants" etc. tend to be very vague and the colour-specifics are good for sorting the chiff from the chaff. I've had a lot of success with "black_pants" "socks" as a search combo where "pants" "socks" was stalling. I'll also note that stockings et al appear to outnumber socks. Ergo searching for this content is not the benchmark for danbooru.

Socks from leggings? Socks is a tag. Pantyhose is a tag. Thighhighs is a tag and stockings is aliased to it.
You can search for any one of those on their own.
We're struggling to understand your goal. It sounds like you want to de-alias things like black_socks from black_legwear. Please just spell out what your goal is and what tag changes you're proposing.
