+1 because it seems these concepts aren't intuitive enough for most users. They work well in writing but not in art it seems. I don't really mind if the chosen term is either what if or alternate universe.

This tag feels overused. A lot of posts here would be better suited under other tags like contemporary or if they mated.
Given the broadness of the term "alternate universes", one common AU ends up being making fantasy settings urban, leading to the overlap with contemporary, something which what if previously didn't have any issues with.
