copyrighting "original"

While I was uploading some original works, I got an idea about the original tag: make it a copyright tag.

Let's start with the basics. We already know that the term "copyright" is an imperfect term and that it's used to mark certain tags, generally tags of shows (gundam), major brands or concepts (vocaloid) or otherwise strongly recognizable terms (os).

I think that every image should ideally have a copyright tag. If you think about it, the copyright tag basically tells you "this thing (or these things) is where this image is coming from". That's the function of the copyright tag for fanart images. But that's also the function of the original tag: it tells you "this image isn't 'from' anything, it's an original image by the artist." I think it has the same value, and should be highlighted in the same way.

The main advantage of doing this is that you can immediately look for the copyright tag on any image. Not only is this nice in general when browsing, it will make images with no copyright tag at all by definition incompletely tagged. Perhaps we could even enhance the mouseover prompt (which I currently find hard to read at times, due to the many tags that are only sorted alphabetically) so display the artist and copyright tags first, or an "artist missing/copyright missing" if either or both are missing.

What do you think, good idea? Terrible?

As discussed recently I strongly prefer a narrow interpretation of the "copy" tag as essentially "series name". But making original a copy: tag sounds reasonable. All images should indeed have either a series name or an indication of the lack thereof. Highlighting the lack thereof by making original purple like series names wouldn't hurt.

I support anything that draws special attention to art/copy/char tags, whether in the individual post page tag listing or mouseovers or whatever.

I also agree with the idea. I was just thinking about it a few days ago in fact.

Anyway, I agree that copyright should be narrow. Basically, each image should ideally have only one, unless there's a crossover going on.

No way, I can think of plenty of reasons for there to be more than one copyright on an image.

I really can't. Of course, by crossover I mean multiple "copyrights" intermingling (be it by cosplay, parody, etc.). So not the narrow definition of crossover, but what the word actually means.

Anyway that's straying slightly off the subject. This change wouldn't affect how to use copyright in every other case.

A cosplay of a character not tied to a series but created by a model, most cosplay models state if they're creating a character or are just doing generic modeling (there's a stupid term for it but I forget what it is off the top of my head). Occasionally they will think up a name to go with this character but never a series so setting original to copyright only made sense.

Ok, since this is easily reversible, and otherwise we'll just dither about it for a day or so and then forget, I'm going to go ahead and set it as a copyright.

I support this. This should cut down on some source request comments... until people start asking where they can download the anime called Original.

Someone has already reverted it once, so if you see it unmarked, go ahead and reapply the copy.

Don't know, but someone must have fixed it already.

I added a line to the start of the original wiki explicitly stating that it's supposed to be a copyright. That can't necessarily stop someone from changing it but hopefully they'll notice it.

Why did you emptyquote a 3 year old post?

How would one tag a character who is the creation of the artist, but comes from someone else's copyright? The example I'm thinking of is Tsuda Nanafushi’s Hyougintou; she is his original character, but the setting she comes from is a Rozen Maiden AU. Would this qualify for original or not?

Yes, tag both original and Rozen. It's come up before with Precure and a couple others.

Use original AND rozen maiden.
