battle_standard -> war_flag alias

Posted under Tags

I'm not sure I follow the logic of the very broad and generic banner being the more specific term for a flag carried by military forces. If anything, I think it makes more sense to alias it to war flag (the name used on wikipedia, along with military flag, battle flag, and standard) and separate it from other types of banners, maybe with an implication. Doesn't really make much sense to me to make a distinct concept harder to search for.

hm. I thought that banner was for the army flags, but it seems like a motley assortment of military and civilian flags. what is the line between banner and flag? "banner" makes sense for things like post #6296443 and nobori, but there's a ton of post #6254958 flags in there too.

anyways, updated the BUR.

Banners (heraldic object) are usually vertically-aligned. And both sides may be supported or not. This (post #6288479) is an example of a banner. While flags used to have horizontal aspect ratio, fluttering free by wind.

that's a good point. would it be worthwhile then to create war banner to complement war flag? all the current vertical military banners could be moved over to war banner to keep birthday banners and shopfronts like post #6151051 and post #5987535 separate. would also be a good idea to update the flag and banner wikis to reduce overlap.

Thanks. Go ahead, had better fixing the wikis first. It will be a good idea to create war banner at first. Based on image search results, war banners are depicting to have vertical aspect ratio.

Was skeptical at first but this does seem to be the most common terminology for both types + even when the flag is used as a weapon. Agreed that having a separate tag for vertical standards/vertical banners/vertical flags is still worth it. Might have the same issues as other orientation-related tags, but maybe vertical flag would be easiest
