Not sure if upscaled

Posted under General

I have been uploading the official Tales of Asteria 4koma (pool #20178), which I extracted from the original game assets. However, I recently found a wiki that has all of the main strips in a higher resolution. I suspect they might have been upscaled because they seem to be slightly blurrier than the assets, but I don't have enough experience to tell for sure. Can someone take a look? I'd like to know whether I should upload the larger images and set each as the parent to its respective asset, or ignore the larger images and continue uploading the assets.

Here's what I know about the images:

Game Assets
  • Example
  • 584 x 1654
  • PNG format
  • Each comic was downloaded to BlueStacks automatically after viewing it in-game (as opposed to manually downloading directly through URLs)
  • Unknown whether larger versions were present on the servers
Wiki Images
  • Example
  • 985 x 2792
  • JPG format
  • Unknown origin; uploaded to the wiki close to the time the game was shut down
  • Slightly blurrier than the game asset version; possibly upscaled

Edit: I did not extract the comics from a Unity assset file like I originially stated; they were in PNG format on the server. I must be too used to extracting from Unity games.

Edit 2: I just learned about the Difference of Gaussians technique on this Stack Exchange post and tried it on the images. The game assets have sharper edges after applying the difference. I also tried upscaling the image in GIMP to match the larger image's resolution and they look somewhat similar close up. Based on these two comparisons, it seems the wiki images were upscaled and I should stick to the game assets. I'll wait a week before uploading more in case someone wants to offer a second opinion.

Updated

I'm a little unqualified to say this, but if the wiki images are of dubious provenance, it's fine to skip them. These 4komas from the game/game server seem reasonable to me. It's as official as it gets unless the artist posts them on their account, or they turn up on a Bamco "Tales of" site, neither of which seem to be options right now.

Makes sense. I suppose since no one has uploaded the wiki images here yet, there shouldn't be any problems even if we're wrong about this. Thanks.
