Raptor (dinosaur) tags

Posted under Tags

We have a raptor tag with no wiki and a velociraptor tag with a decent one -- which says it effectively applies to all raptors.

I believe an alias is in order. Not sure which should be the primary tag. Leaning toward raptor, as it's more general, has more posts, and was tagged both earlier and more recently than velociraptor. However, perhaps "raptor (animal)" would be a better name since so many things are called raptor.

I'd go with raptor (dinosaur), because birds of prey can also be called raptors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_prey

yes, I know birds are dinosaurs too ok

Makes sense. All the more reason to have a qualifier too.

I don't know if there's any point in tagging velociraptors separately from raptors. There are certainly velociraptors tagged only as raptor, and most people searching for velociraptor probably wouldn't mind seeing other members of the family, so I think an alias would be better.

We do have a few other specific raptor tags:
atrociraptor (4 posts, all tagged raptor too)
microraptor (1 post, not tagged raptor)
oviraptor (4 posts, none tagged raptor)
pyroraptor (4 posts, none tagged raptor)
utahraptor (1 post, not tagged raptor)
They're probably not worth implicating even if we do that for velociraptor, but they should all get the raptor tag at least.
All velociraptor posts (18) already have the raptor tag too.

BUR #31227 has been rejected.

create implication feathered_raptor -> raptor
create implication feathered_raptor -> feathered_dinosaur
create implication feathered_t-rex -> tyrannosaurus_rex
create implication feathered_t-rex -> feathered_dinosaur

create alias velociraptor -> raptor_(dinosaur)

The possibly controversial part, separate in case someone wants to suggest an implication instead.

I do.

Forgive me if this dosen't make sense as I am very sleep deprived.
Velociraptor is a common misnomer but was actually a small feathered creature. Right now the velicoraptor tag is only small feathered dinos while Raptor -velociraptor includes everything from this to jurrasic park fanart and this post #2070822. And people looking for the former might very much not want the latter.

Noting that Oviraptor is probably the most visually distinct of all the ones listed and doesn't need paleo art to be regonisable from the rest. So that should be taken into consideration when it comes to mass updating or maybe even implication.

post #7409462 isn't just artstyle. This https://www.syfy.com/sites/syfy/files/2021/03/oviraptor.jpg is an oviraptor. This is not just a "jurrasic park raptor" clone in appearance.

Imo what we should have instead is a feathered raptor style tag to separate the two "groups" of raptor fanart. Possibly trex too (there's a bunch of debate about whether or not adult t rex had feathers).

How about this?

Most people would use the word raptor to mean the dinos. The only reason we don't is that for some reason while this website decided to generalize most other animal tags into one bird of prey was deprecated because "they're different animals"

BUR #31558 has been approved by @nonamethanks.

mass update ~microraptor ~oviraptor ~pyroraptor ~utahraptor -> raptor

I'll do this. The alias is unnecessary unless we actually get people tagging eagles and such as raptors (highly doubtful).

It would probably make sense to have different tags for feathered velociraptors and jurassic park velociraptors if we had more posts, but the tag is so small that it's less than one page of results, so at the moment it doesn't matter and there's no need for it. feathered dinosaur already suffices to filter down the results if you really want to.
