Extreme Detail

Posted under Tags

I'd like to turn the Extreme Detail pool (pool #20044) into a tag. Right now the pool mostly contains loaded interior and complex exterior posts along with miscellaneous posts with the same type of overly cluttered, "tons to look at" sort of appeal such as post #7886721, post #7362230, post #1407483, post #3085114, etc.

I think it'd be useful to have the interior and exterior tags imply it, so there's an overall tag for that kind of image.

My only hangup is that I don't think the current name is good or reflects the use case? Like, "extreme detail" sounds like it would also apply to just, very detailed rendering of clothes or something, which is why I'm not making a BUR yet - I'd like to brainstorm a better name. I think something like "cluttered composition" or similar might be better?

Hm...The pool mentions the ideal sort of clutter is that of hidden object games and Where's Waldo books...Maybe a name that plays into that? I agree "Extreme Detail" isn't a great name too, as it makes me think of highly detailed close-up of body parts or objects, so I'd never guess what its actual purpose was.

"Cluttered Composition" doesn't sound terrible to me, but I'm struggling to come up with anything else atm. Hm...I'm trying to think of a name that properly alludes to the sheer chaos it is to stare at posts in the pool...

The pool didn't have very many posts when I found it a few months ago, which disappointed me since I really love this type of artwork. "Chaos" is an apt word to describe it. Organized, cluttered chaos.

It's hard for me to think of other options too, I just know "extreme detail" sounds definitely wrong to me lol

I believe part of the issue with the current set-up is in fact the name itself. You'd never find it unless someone told you. Which is a darn shame, as I do enjoy the posts in this pool, and there's clearly an audience for it too. Hence why we're all trying to change the name lol.

as a big fan of this kind of art myself i'd be in support of such a tag. for the name i would take notes from loaded interior and complex exterior; "complex/cluttered/loaded_composition" doesn't sound too bad as a tag name. i think a "chaos" related name may be confused for scenes that are chaotic in ways unrelated to level of detail.

Not to mention there is already a pool called "Chaos" (pool #2355) which deals with several different things happening at once, which I'd worry over confusion with if we go with a name like "chaos" (as I can see said pool being another on the chopping block to convert to a tag, possibly because I happened to bring it up).

I think you're on the right track, taking notes from those tag names. Hm...Maybe "cluttered scenery"? That wouldn't work with posts like post #8158411 tho...I like "loaded composition", also too.

"busy composition" sounds better to me, "busy scenery" would imply that the tag is only for scenery posts, excluding images like post #7820729.

this is a great point as someone who was about to also suggest a "cluttered_scenery" tag

This is a great point also, especially as I kept coming back to the maximalist part of the thought here too. Theres lots of way a composition can be "cluttered" and not really fit in with the extreme details pool..... the thing the original title does RIGHT is that it very rightly points out that whatever it is, whether its the scenery in this post here post #8338856 or a ton of different detailed renderings of a character like this post here post #8327155 , it's all v detailed -- what the clutter names dont really do well is make it obvious that its for very well rendered/detailed stuff too. Because you can definitely have very cluttered images that are more of a mush of stuff than would be suited for stuff within this pool/new tag, if that makes sense.

I will also say it kind of reminds me of the "too many x" tags, but this isnt really too many of one thing so idk. Hopefully these half thoughts help someone else brainstorm more though

No no, you make a great point as well. What separate "Extreme Detail" from "Chaos" is that it's extremely detailed in a way "Chaos" simply is not, similar to the "too many x" tags. Which makes me wonder, if perhaps, we could go with a name like "absurdly busy composition" or something like that (in line with our other tags for ridiculous lengths, like absurdly long hair or absurdly wide shot). The "absurdly" tags are intended for extremes much the same way as too many, so I think something like that could possibly work and keep to the spirit of the pool.

I think "maximalist" might be the direction to go here, personally? I think it most broadly covers the sort of very busy, absurdly detailed scenery that these images tend to use.

"Maximalist composition", something like that...

BUR #40890 is pending approval.

mass update pool:20044 -> cluttered_composition -pool:20044

Gonna make a couple BURs that can be voted on for this based on the suggestions that have popped up in the thread. None of these are gonna include implications for loaded interior and complex exterior, that's probably better to do once we've figured out a name for this.

im not sure how to feel about it, is that almost to broad? Like I like it but am also unsure if its really intuitive ya know

Yeah, "maximalist" for me just didn't sit right, but I never could find the exact words for why I disliked the term in this instance. At the very least, putting all these names to a vote will help nail down which of these we should go with. All of these are objectively better than "extreme detail" lol.

It seems like so far people like "cluttered composition" best, and I'm inclined to agree, I think it covers the idea well, even if it's not "stuff-literally-everywhere" cluttered, posts like the aforementioned post #8338856 can be said to be cluttered with detail, even if the actual physical space itself isn't cluttered. I think it's hard to find a name that's 100% intuitive (as is the case with any tag of this sort), so a good wiki will help in that regard.

Yeah! I love the BUR voting system on here a lot since it lets you gauge opinion of bystanders who might not have a lot of input to add to the conversation itself, haha.

to be honest I dont think I like cluttered composition either. Would this post fit into it the same way that it fits into the extreme details pool? post #8338856

Like idk if I would call it cluttered, it feels very clean to me just rendered with lots of little details

Also I think it doesn't really describe the "extreme" aspect of it either. I can think of many kinds of "cluttered" posts that wouldn't fit under this pool but would under that name. Busy composition isn't really better in that aspect either

Yeah, that's why it's so tricky to find a name... I'm blanking on other ideas, though.

Me too

I hate to say this, but does that mean it's still better left as a pool?

It does feel unfair to let this die just bc the english language sucks though. Outside of the naming issue, I do agree this would be great to move to a tag

I'm going to think about this some more honestly because I like this concept a lot. I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if cluttered_composition went through - I just like this kind of image style quite a lot and want to see it done justice, yknow?
