rename naruto -> naruto_(classic)

BUR #41417 has been approved by @nonamethanks.

create alias naruto -> naruto_(classic)
remove alias naruto -> naruto_(classic)
deprecate naruto

I feel that having Naruto and Naruto (series) coexisting just makes the posts harder to tag properly. We should make it clear that Naruto refers to the original series and is not an umbrella tag like Naruto (series). We currently do this for the Mega Man franchise with Mega Man (classic).

If _(classic) won’t work for some reason, I am open to alternatives. If there is agreement to qualify the tag, I’ll draft a deprecation BUR.

Yes, that seems like a reasonable comparison (as does One Piece, like I mentioned.) Do we? There are plenty of series with timeskips that don't have two copytags to distinguish them. Why do we need this distinction?

The difference is the timeskip in One Piece doesn't split off into a new series.

It's only a new series in the anime adaptation though, not the original manga. The anime was re-titled for purely promotional reasons, which I don't think is a good justification for splitting the copytag here.

How would you suggest we handle searching for different character designs, then? Uzumaki Naruto has different default designs in each series tag, for example. Merging them together would mean looking for these would be more difficult, since it will all be mixed together.

The same way we do for every other series, with separate chartags where it's needed

You've got the cause and effect backwards here. Danbooru only started making costume chartags (outside of like magical girls) for gacha games where there were a bunch of alt costumes, all with hundreds if not thousands of posts, that couldn't be searched for otherwise. Making a dozen different charatags for Naruto classic versus Naruto shippuden and Sasuke classic versus Sasuke shippuden when this can currently be covered by the two-tag searches for the charname + shippuden is silly. Especially since we already are doing so for their Boruto versions.

On the other hand, there is definitely a counter-argument to be made with regards to One Piece gaining an arbitrary secondary copytag or secondary chartags for the timeskip.

Sorry, but I'm not really seeing a counter-argument here? Like, yes, Danbooru did start making costume chartags because of gacha games- so what? There might be some level of difference in volume, sure, but at the end of the day, what we're dealing with is posts that are already tagged one way, and that we'll need to go back and re-tag no matter what option we choose here, whether we choose to split the copytag or the chartag. And I personally think that costume tags are just a good idea, generally? Implications are a powerful, flexible feature that allow a lot of search granularity with just one tag, and that frees up the second tag slot for other things. And while making a dozen or more implications sounds like a lot of work, it's not THAT much in the grand scheme of things, it's something we'll only need to do once and certainly someone will be willing to step up to make that BUR, when people are already willing to make far more BURs than that for the aforementioned gacha game costumes.

Yes, pre- vs post-timeskip designs *can* be covered by the current two-copytag system, but that doesn't mean they *should* be. It's not how we use copytags for any other series, it's not intuitive (nobody says "naruto classic" when talking about the earlier chapters), and there are gray areas, such has characters who's appearance doesn't change (orochimaru_(naruto) for example)

If there are gray areas and you cannot confirm otherwise what's up, then you'd just use the master copytag (android_18 for example looks the same between dragon_ball_z and dragon_ball_super besides clothes, so unless she's wearing an attire from one of the two shows, she's just tagged dragon_ball). That's standard practice across copytags where characters appear in multiple entries in a franchise.
