Wiki Character Limit

Posted under General

So I've recently taken to creating pages for the outfits of the Nikki series on an alt, mainly to avoid the problem of sifting through wiki after wiki and avert character request as much as possible. However, Miracle Nikki has a grand total of 2063 outfits (as of writing) that I do hope to get around to uploading the official art for one of these days.

Needless to say, I hit the character limit not even halfway through. I made an emergency list_of_7_nations_outfits_(lilith-cloud-pigeon) wiki page in order to save my progress, but I really have no idea what the protocol for this sort of thing is. What can I do to catalog these without making five billion pages?

I don't think there is anything you can do other than making five billion wikis. The last time I recall there being a situation where a list wiki got so filled up that it hit the character limit was the List of Virtual YouTubers, which existed from 2018 to 2022, which ended with it just getting nuked because it was so massive that it started chugging the site when accessed and became borderline uneditable (a situation escalated when one user began uploading fanart of VTubers not represented on site and proceeding to add them to the list in that last year). And keep in mind this was before we had !asset, which is also eating up the character limit in your wiki, List of VTubers was pure text.

So if you still want to have a complete list of outfits, I think you're going to have to toss the assets out and give each tag its own wiki with the asset there instead.

I don't know if there's precedent for this, but maybe the list could be broken up into smaller sub wikis with a more manageable amount on each, like 500 per page. And then the main list wiki could link out to those sub pages. So the overall number of wikis you would need to sift through would still be relatively low.

This would be similar to what's done over on TVTropes where when there are too many examples on a work page, they get broken up into subpages by alphabetical order.

I guess I could probably try making wiki pages for the specific folders that go over a hundred or so outfits. That way, the main page can stay relatively manageable, and we avoid too many subpages.

Ugh... This is both exactly what I expected and the last thing I wanted to hear. I feel like I'd hit that damn character limit without the assets, but they really do help make finding and creating tags for missing outfits that much more manageable. At the very least, the wiki for Miracle Nikki actually shows the main assets, so it's not like one can't make due without...It's just way more annoying.

I think what I'll probably do is see if I can salvage the situation through independent pages, but if I can't...well, guess the assets gotta go...Sadly...

This wiki editing thing sure can be tough.
