These two tags are confusing.
How are taggers to interpret and apply them?
I was going to update the tag pages to clarify the matter, but this was also an issue eight years ago, see topic #14231.
It seems to me as they're not sufficiently differentiated, and go together most of the time, so, signature should be aliased to artist_name, entirely; but I am not here now to request an alias.
i don't know about others, but my internal logic for these tags has always been that the artist's name written in plain text is an artist name, while a signature with an intentional design or logo representing the artist is a signature.

Signature just refers to when someone signs their name; artist_name is when the artist's name appears on the image, but it doesn't have to be a signature. post #9690844 is a signature without an artist name, post #9705764 is an artist name that's not a signature, and post #9716207 is both. They're two distinct, often overlapping tags.
