deprecate peril

It's an incredibly ambiguous tag and it's so broad as to be kinda useless. The vast majority of its posts fit neatly into either imminent death (about to be killed) or imminent rape, and the few that don't look mostly like BDSM and shouldn't have been tagged with peril to begin with.

Theres situations where someone has a gun pointed at them but they arent going to be killled, maybe just kidnapped or something.

For such situations, there are tags like threat, at gunpoint, etc. However, in my opinion, all of these tags are quite vague, since it’s often hard to tell what’s going to happen next. For example, here: post #9927585

this is not a bdsm tag, it's a ryona subgenre. there are 124k pixiv posts tagged with it

https://www.pixiv.net/tags/%E3%83%92%E3%83%AD%E3%83%94%E3%83%B3

see post #1097377, post #1098295, post #1188066, post #1244950, post #1188079

the problem is there is a difference between consensual bdsm and the quasi noncon porn that airs on tv (think every time a female character from SAO is captured and is about to get raped for example) and the latter turned into a subgenre of illustration

you can't tag some of these posts with threat if they're solo and i'm not even sure something like post #594137 with a frigging bomb ticking is supposed to be tagged with scared or panicking or horrified

We still have a proper tag for that: imminent rape.

And that is just imminent death.

I think this tag needs clean up, but there are plenty of things in it I wouldn't call rapey or imminent death like post #9106863, post #7276285, post #7890100, post #8194466

The tag absolutely needs cleanup, which is one of the reasons I feel it should be deprecated. Sometimes it gets used for stuff that's better under imminent death or imminent suicide, a lot of times it gets used for unwilling BDSM stuff, and sometimes it's used as a generic "uh oh!" situation tag. It's just too broad.

Part of me wonders about, instead of deprecating it, aliasing the tag to something like unwanted_bdsm and gardening out the death and "uh oh" stuff.

But what would you use for hanging from the ledge or the characters about to be attacked like in my post? If the tag is deprecated where do those go?

For the record, the OP edited the peril and imminent death wiki pages before creating this thread, essentially swapping their contents.

Before that, it was imminent death which stated in wiki to be ambiguous in favor of either dying or peril.

Their contents haven't quite been swapped. The wiki for imminent death was created during the attempt to deprecate it over 2 years ago and hadn't been edited since. And the previous wiki of peril was so incredibly broad as to encompass imminent death, imminent suicide, and imminent rape, not to mention all the "uh oh" mistags.

As part of trying to get rid of the "Impending Doom" pool, I wound up looking into the possible tags, and seeing that snarl led to those edits and this thread.

None of the posts you linked above belonged in peril to begin with, under its previous wiki of "A situation in which the victim(s), if (s)he does not escape or is not saved very soon, will almost certainly be killed or meet another equally horrible fate." The first two you linked would meet surrounded, but all of them should've been gardened.

The fact that peril was used as a catch-all doesn't help argue that it's not ambiguous. If anything, it does the opposite.

imo peril is a better tag than imminent death

like, you have seen anime, right? look at post #10024699. yeah there are 5 seconds left in the bomb clock but obviously someone is going to save them with 1 sec remaining. or post #9912983. yeah she is about to drown, but someone is probably going to break the glass before she dies. post #9559800 isn't really going to die they're just going to get isekaied. post #8768963 is just going to be amputeefied. post #8593176 isn't really going to die either because anya can hear what twilight is thinking.
