mass update pool:23084 upscaled -> -upscaled meta:corrected_aspect_ratio
create implication corrected_aspect_ratio -> resized
The comics in pool #23084 (all mostly SFW) were resized by me from game assets with a bad aspect ratio. I created topic #28298 to ask whether it would be okay to upload them and how I should tag them. I was told my proposed method make sense, that uploading them would likely be justified given the circumstances, and that upscaled should be fine for those posts. I plan to do the same with the Alternative Girls card art we don't have yet in the near future (a lot of them don't have high-quality images online), but I want to try and resolve something about the metatags first.
I don't believe the upscaled tag should be used for images in which the aspect ratio was corrected. Normally, when I think of an upscaled image, I think of both dimensions being increased proportionally to increase the resolution without changing the aspect ratio. But the purpose of correcting the aspect ratio is to restore an image to something close to how it originally looked, not to make it look bigger on a screen.
Sometimes, the only way to obtain high-quality art from a game is to extract an asset with a bad aspect ratio and correct it. This is the case with the aforementioned comics and a lot of Alternative Girls card art, in which the only images available online are low-quality in-game screenshots, meaning the asset would be resized in-game anyway. Basically, it's easier to justify changing the aspect ratio than making an image bigger. Thus, I don't believe we should conflate the two.
While it's not the same as upscaling, it is still resizing the image, so I believe it should still count as a third-party edit that would be allowed only under certain circumstances:
- There is no other version of the image that is of comparable quality available.
- One dimension is made larger while the other is kept the same.
- An appropriate filter is used to prevent aliasing.
I tagged upscaled on the comics I resized. This BUR will replace the tag on those posts with corrected aspect ratio and make it a metatag. I chose this name to make it clear it's a correction and because "fixed aspect ratio" means something completely different. I know it's a bit long, so I'm open to alternatives.
