Re-uploading for better quality question

Posted under General

Had a question about the policy of re-uploading images that are of a better quality. For some Game CGs I've been uploading, I recently discovered a source with much better quality. Some are seemingly twice the resolution and I've uploaded those. However, for others the difference is less extreme (1.5 times as good or.. maybe 1.3 times as good...). I'm wondering how much better of a resolution would qualify as being worthy of a re-upload. Also, honestly, how I would best determine that difference (I'm just estimating on those "twice as good" or "1.5/1.3 times as good"). Thanks

Resolution and quality aren't the same thing. Make sure you're clear about which one you're asking about.

If "1.5/1.3 times as good" is referring to the resolution (which you don't need to guess, since it's very easy to calculate), then it's still a significant difference. It's always beneficial to upload the best version of the image. Just make sure the larger image hasn't been upscaled, because that's just artificially increasing the resolution.

Good point, I suppose "quality" is more of a subjective term. Or would that be something quantifiable? What would be the best way to compare resolution rates? As far as I know, the images haven't been upscaled.

"Quality" can also refer to things like image artifacts. If you have two images with the same resolution, the one with fewer artifacts and less aliasing is superior. However, you often need to zoom in to see them.

Example: post #9739112 (superior) vs. post #6634767 (inferior)

I feel like I must be misunderstanding you because comparing the resolutions of two images is extremely trivial. Assuming the aspect ratios are the same, you just take the same dimension (either height or width) of both and divide the larger number by the smaller number.

For game assets, there may sometimes be cases in which the whole image is larger but the sprite itself is smaller. Those can be checked by viewing them both at the same zoom setting.
