rubik's revenge

Posted under Tags

Rubik's cube solver here! People don't call them by their government names in casual conversation, probably because it's stupid. (And also because they're marketed under different names depending on manufacturer, but unlike the Rubik's cube which has lowkey become a genericized trademark nobody knows what a "professor's cube" is)

BUR #63773 has been rejected.

create alias 2x2_rubik's_cube -> pocket_cube
create alias 4x4_rubik's_cube -> rubik's_revenge
create alias 5x5_rubik's_cube -> professor's_cube
create alias 6x6_rubik's_cube -> v-cube_6

cube size -> official name

  • I think it might be better to not use rubik's cube as the umbrella tag and have twisty_puzzle be used as the umbrella tag. This is because that's what people call this genre of puzzle. This would also encompass puzzles that aren't face turning cubes such as the pyraminx.
  • I also think it would be better to have the "official names" be aliased to the cube size.
    • It would be nice to have a consistent naming scheme that people can remember without having to know the history of rubik's cubes.
    • V-cube is a separate brand from Rubik's brand. They also have their own 3x3-5x5 under the names V-Cube 3-5.

To add on to what Ylimegirl said,

In the cubing community, no one actually uses Rubik's brand cubes or V-Cubes. (Apparently Rubik's brand has released a proper speedcube about a year ago under the name Rubik's Speed, but while much better than previous attempts at making speedcubes, it is still a bit behind other cubes in the price range in terms of QoL and features). There are a dozen companies making cubes for WCA competitions and a handful of them also make some of the more obscure types.

if nobody calls them that then we should probably alias to 4x4 rubik's cube but i think keeping rubik's cube on top is best

most posts of all cube sizes are already tagged in the rubik's cube tag
all cubes are cubes so rubik's cube makes sense as the twisty cube tag
would be weird to not find a cube searching by rubik's cube just because the cube isn't 3x3x3
we can't imply rubik's cube -> twisty puzzle if rubik's cube is 99.9% of twisty puzzle

so imho pyramid and spheres should be linked in the rubik's cube wiki but will have to be kept separate because there are too few posts.

unless we make pyraminx (twisty puzzle) imply rubik's cube (imho this makes most sense on danbooru) but to do that it needs at least 10 posts.

Another thing I was considering was naming the tags rubik's_cube_(nxn) where n is the size. I personally think it looks cleaner than nxn_rubik's_cube, but i also think it might be kind of dumb to have a pseudo-qualifier like that

Regarding the point about tag overlap, would it be a better option to instead alias rubik's cube to twisty puzzle and list the 3x3 rubik's cube as the default type in the wiki? With the different types of twisty puzzles aliased to it.

BUR #63796 has been approved by @evazion.

create alias pocket_rubik's_cube -> 2x2_rubik's_cube
create alias rubik's_revenge -> 4x4_rubik's_cube
create alias professor's_cube -> 5x5_rubik's_cube
create alias v-cube_6 -> 6x6_rubik's_cube

Proposing reversing because nobody knows these names.

I would agree with this BUR because in many cubing videos I watched, they used the nomenclature "n x n" rather than those marketing names. Easier to remember it seems.
