I propose that the tag for this wind instrument be adjusted slightly to avoid confusion. There is precedence for this kind of action; for instance, bow_(instrument) to distinguish from bow_(weapon)...

Some people, albeit few, seem to remember what a tape_recorder (15 + 1 posts at the moment) is. There is also a general tag for videocasette, but none for ?videocasette_recorder. vcr is an artist tag.

VCR ought to be qualified as the artist then, it may be dead and gone asa technology, but it's still well enough known as a term that it ought to be reserved as a general tag. Otherwise we'll end up with noise in the artist's tag.
As for the general tag, qualification wouldn't hurt, though I thought the instrument was a pretty well known concept. I guess the comparison with bow is pretty apropos, multiple homophones without a clear most common usage.
The vcr tag wasn't even originally for the artist.
It only has six posts, and the four of them contain actual VCRs. Going by the dates, these were tagged well before the remaining two images, one of which is deleted. Not only that, but both of them have other artists tagged as well:
Unfortunately neither have sources, but both artists were tagged simultaneously, so it can only be assumed that these are probably collaborations of some kind.
An artist with half an image definitely shouldn't get preference, so vcr should be left to the electronic device. Without any more information vcr_(artist) will be the best option for renaming the artist.
Not to derail the thread further, but I feel like I should also point out both posts also share another tag, dissonance, which contains two other images (also without source):
I can only guess this was intended to be another artist tag. All four were uploaded and tagged by the same user, so he's the only one who knows.
Anyway, back at the actual topic of the thread, I'm pretty familiar with the instrument but it's still not the first thing I think of when I hear "recorder". If only to make it more obvious, adding a qualifier wouldn't hurt.
^ dissonance apparently refers to a fanfic by the uploader and it appears that the lineart of post #1075381 was made by someone named VCR and colored by Raide, as verified from here
