Lack of artists on pixiv uploads

Posted under General

It seems that great many pixi uploads lack any artist tags whatsoever. It's greatly annoying and more difficult to fix afterwards. Therefore I'd like to request all posters to add artists to their pixiv uploads. If you absolutely can't figure it out (even after reading the neighbouring threads concerning artist identification on pixiv), please (for each artist):
1) designate one upload as a pilot post
2) tag it with an appropriate tag, I propose artist_needed
3) post a comment asking for help on it, *REMEMBER* to link to the source page (not the source image URL) so that we can access it without pixiv serving a 403

If by your 3) you mean that the source URL of posts snagged from pixiv should point to the source page rather than the source image URL, various people have noted that the image's URL contains the author's tag, whereas the image page URL does not, which would make an "auto-tagger" not need to interface with pixiv at all in order to guess the artist tag from the source URL alone.

If you meant that in comments the URL of the source page should be given, absolutely - for those of us without Shinjidude's nice greasemonkey script, that is. :)

That latter, incidentally, is detailed at forum #6691.

I'd further suggest that when the artist's name is unknown, we use the tag "[x]_(pixiv[y])" where [x] is the artist's handle on pixiv, and [y] is the artist's userid.

This practice seems widespread (search "*(pixiv*"), though I'm not sure whether in those cases the [x] all correspond to artist handles or whether they are real names with the "_(pixiv[y])" added for disambiguation (we can always tack on a prime, "'", or something after [x] to indicate that the true name of the author is as yet unknown). If artists are tagged this way, if we later decide to build in a db field for "pixiv id" (unlikely I suppose), autoconversion would be easy.

Yeah, the greasemonkey script takes care of this. That doesn't mean people should stop adding artists, but it does mean it's extremely easy to figure out who the artist is in cases where someone didn't. I think I have an artist for almost every pixiv I check.

I think people are reluctant to tag pixiv artists because they aren't too sure about the exact name to use. For pixiv artists that don't have a website, they have a nickname and a username and I think that's where the problem lies. I hate posts with no artist tagged (which is why I created forum #6944) so choose the most aesthetically pleasing name, either user or nick, and add it to the database.

Maybe if there was a rule on tagging pixiv artists without websites with either a) nickname or b) username, it would make the job a lot easier.

But then again, I remember hearing about tagging an unknown artist with his pixiv ID which I have yet to do.

I want to bump this because I still see it happening over and over with multiple people.

I understand if you're just randomly browsing pixiv and come across one image from an artist with only 5 pixiv postings and you just want to upload it and don't want to bother with an artist entry. Lots of us have done that from time to time. It's always better if you can take the time and tag it, but it's not the end of the world if you don't.

But what I'm seeing is people consistently uploading the same artists over and over, known artists with existing tags and lots of posts, and not adding artists. Not only that, I'm talking artists who other danbooru posters had been uploading for some time (with artists) before someone else jumped in.

This certainly isn't about "ownership" of artists or anything like that, but if you're not going to add the artist tag when it's easy to do so, please let one of the half dozen other people trying to upload the same exact picture upload it, so we don't have to keep manually adding the artist tags after the fact (since danbooruup doesn't automatically append extra tags from the upload anymore).

That is very much *not* Danbooru policy. We like to give artists credit, as well as link users to more work by the artist. And a proper artist entry the first time makes all subsequent additions easier to tag.

The artist should be added whenever possible.

It takes 1 to 5 minutes to find the artist name and add an entry to danbooru, and its much more simplier to click on the artist tag and look at all his works on danbooru, than installing the asian languages to your computer (i know many people who doesnt have japanese installed), register on pixiv, and look at the artist stuff. And in many cases, artists post some stuff on their website, and some on their pixiv page. Why do all that when you can simply use 5 of your precious minutes and add an artist entry and make things much more easy for everyone else.

Because it's easy. Because it allows a user to bring up all images by an artist without having to do a source: search (potentially across multiple sites). Because if there's an artist tag, you can also use it to bring up images we don't have a source link for. Because artists not infrequently use different names from one site to another. There's really no good reason not to.

Snesso give me some good lessons about how to put the artist name, so i always do it, it's no so complicated :)

The only problem is when the name is a weird nick or frase :S

I just go with their pixiv nickname if they don't have a site with a better name. Even if you see their name on a website but you can't figure out what it is exactly, just tag it with the nickname.

You aren't going to get blocked from the site for getting an artist's name wrong. I'm sure someone will come around and fix it for you. If you are really uptight about it, just do as 葉月 says. Add a comment to the picture and ask for help.
