Which isn't related to if he could understand someone directly talking to him in space. :P If you wanna go that route, any elecromagnetic wave could be used to communicate, from regular old radio or pulsed visible light to directional laser to infrared and ultraviolet.

Cave Johnson here! Some people think its stupid to make robots talk in space. Apparently, something like, "a lack of air" means people, or more importantly, robots in space can't talk! Can't have that, so we beat the problem over the head with science until they COULD talk. Cost enough to feed 3 billion people for over 50 years, but I don't see THEM doing any science!
