Well, companies make more money(and spend less) when they use certain kinds of things. So it makes sense when a company does it. Even if it is less convinient for Consumers(dick move sony on that Vita memory card crap).
There's definitely a conversion plug out there somewhere. I have the same problem with my ASUS G53-SW, I get like 2.5-3 hours off a full charge, but thats the price you pay for having a beastly computer.

Seconded. Actually, had to do that for my own laptop - took 10 min and works fine for 2 years already :3 Soldering is quite a useful skill indeed, especially in the modern age (and when you don't have enough money) :3
