    The subway yards and maintenance shops are all above ground. It would be rather difficult to overhaul a train inside of a tunnel.

    I don't think it really matters.
    Some places have it under, some above. I know up in the DC metropolitan area, there were above and under ground service facilities. It just depended on cost, space, and effectiveness. Why build something that'll make you lose money? Making another facility in NYC underground would cost way more anyways, even today.
