So now the question is, if Kogasa is actually fabricated by the umbrella, does this mean she's really pregnant? Couldn't the umbrella just be altering the original design a little in a desperate attempt to surprise someone?

I do not agree with the interpretation of that translation. In the context, the line means "That personality you displayed is very old fashioned and won't scare anyone of this age." The phrase "crazy made-up personality" was simply "キャラ(character)" in the original Japanese.
Well, fanbase and fananything don't care for canon that much, not about the species or the things that Zun wrote.
Attitudes, personalities and behavior, most of them don't fit.
Look at Alice, Chen, Ran, Yukari... actually look at 90% of them and you will see that it doesn't fit much the actual character/species.
You just need to learn to ignore it and enjoy whatever they are doing, or not, and just ignore it. That's why I don't read some of the stuff out there.
@Unicode: Really? Never knew that. Since you mention it, yes, that would make sense in that karakasas are most considered to be a young child's bugbear if that.
JesusK: Kind of like how Letty is portrayed as a mother-figure to Cirno, despite the fact that Letty mentioned that fairies are basically aberrations of nature, where as youkai like her make things that are already cold that much colder? Yes, I know, most of fannon contradicts cannon, however, there is just more fun in trying to apply the rules of cannon. I don't mean going around, and pointing out inconsistencies with logic (that's just asking for trouble), I mean trying to take cannon, and somehow have it fit with what is going on in fannon.
Also, yes, the idea of Kogasa doing this just to surprise someone does appeal to me. Kind of reminds me of this: post #781356
