3) As long as the company feels you should be able to play. (Until the next release is out or simply until they feel they don't earn enough anymore).
I loved Diablo, but won't buy DIII (or any similar game) for this very reason. Single player only possible with a server connection? You must be kidding. Those companies can shove their DRM where the sun never shines.

Or 4) as long as said company is encouraging items trade for real money. I bought Diablo III, and it's really fun and all, but apparently, you always have to be online, just to avoid players hacking the game to add some overpowered object. Nevermind the fact that you don't want to trade, you're forced to always play online, and be spammed with "awesome bow for 50K", or "witch doctor hat for 90K", or "stout shako for 2 refined".
