The architecture looks very north European to me. Feels oddly familiar.

I knew the atmosphere was familiar. Can't really tell what city this is, but I might have actually visited this place.

Might be Helsinki. There's another image featuring the harbor.

The artist says it's Sweden, though.

    It's probably Stockholm.

...how the heck did you google a real location from just a drawing of it?

At our current technology stage, my guess is that he "cheated". he already had the location more or less figured, so it was just a matter of loading googlemaps and navigating there to confirm.

In about three years, we'll probably be able to input this picture into google and have it figure itself the matches on Earth.

I felt like challenging myself to some detective work.

First, two assumptions: The artist's drawing was accurate, and your guess of Stockholm was correct (probable tourist destination in Sweden).

Second, I Google'd the light rail systems in Stockholm, and got a list of lines from Wikipedia. I entered the name of each one into an image search, looking for a line which had red trains - got the Saltsjöbanan.

Last, I chose a station on the line (Östervik) and followed it on Maps, until I saw the cluster of light yellow buildings. I confirmed it was the spot by the details on the building with the red roof in this image.

That... that's some TV cop show level of internet snooping. I'm impressed!
