question! why is it that byakuren always seem to be on the winning side on these "buddism vs taoism" segments?

Possibly because Japanese people don't practice Taoism anymore, and Touhou is set in modern times, meaning that Miko's side of the argument has basically lost.

Alternately possibly because Byakuren is way more popular than Miko.

    Take your pick.

Pretty much this. It doesn't help that Byakuren has a huge experience advantage over Miko and appears more powerful in general when looking at their backstories (1000+ year-old magician who survived in Makai vs schemer who can "hear your desires" and "listen to ten people talking at the same time").

Helps that Hijiri is a harder boss fight, as well. Toyo also takes full damage from bombs the whole way through which doesn't tilt things in her favor, either.

It's real annoying. Byakuren does have a lot on Miko, but it's like being a hermit and saint, thus a wealth of divine, spiritual power, doesn't count for anything. She just woke up, Byakuren has experience, etc., but you would figure Miko to be on par.

That, and also, in the background, it's explained that Byakuren blocked Miko's resurection (not on purpose, apparently, don't quote me on that) by installing her shrine on Miko's mausoleum.

The entire place is some kind of weird space-time anomaly so that's debatable.

Alternative explanation: since part of Byakuren's gimmick is physical power and part of Miko's gimmick is genius-since-birth, this is all just the big dumb brute bullying the nerd with the funny headgear.

This, this, this. While "X is weaker than Y" is always good for a laugh (Tasukete Eirin!, anyone?) All of the Buddhism vs. Taoism images feel mean-spirited to me. It's about as funny as a Fox News segment, and it's downright offensive for both characters directly involved.

I don't think there are any official statements on that... The Great Hakurei Barrier is simply a barrier that keeps it from being seen from the outside, that's all.
