Oddly enough I remember the term from FFXI. Those were the worst.

I believe the plot archetype for this strip is: Peppermint Patty asks Marcy for the answer to a question; Marcy gives a detailed response which goes over Patty's head; Patty puts down a comedic oversimplification.

In a previous strip (post #1255186), Nue was the stand-in for a minor character from the early '90s named Lydia. The odd thing about Lydia is, before we learned that was her name, her initial gimmick was that she called herself by a different name every day, which frustrated Linus.

I'm pretty sure there was a strip like this during this period, where Linus asked Lydia for her name and she gave him the full litany of the names she used.
