Actually I think that someone that was one of the designers of the persona games said that Personas were at least in part based on stands. I didn't read that first hand, but I heard it on a podcast(from a fairly reliable guy, though), so I wouldn't put absolute faith in what I'm saying here.

The persona system is based off of the Guardian spirit system from Shin Megami Tensei If...

Stands still came first by a fair margin. Hell, stands were around before Shin Megami Tensei startted. Or at least before 'Shin Megami Tensei If...' I mean sure, it's also likely that person's were intended to be their own thing, but at the same time there are a lot of similarities. Reflections of the user's true selves. As strong as the user's will. Etc. The only difference is that stand's are more entirely reflective of one's person, down to their abilities and design while persona's are symbolic of their users' personalities only in design. For the most part anyways.
