If you look closely at the level tile Mario is on (World 1-5), it's black. Cleared levels in SMB3 show up as white tiles.

The human girls from Gensokyo seem to grow quickly bored with their current haircuts and change them all the time. Reimu and Marisa in particular can be sporting anything from shoulder to waist length hair and still look in-character.
