They're running commercials now about how you can translate conversations with your cell phone. Wonder if that'd be of any help? I feel I'd like to use it too if it's seriously that accurate, but...guess that's asking too much. (^^;)

I wonder if this had more meaning than it should. It is quite sad to see the state of Japan and their language. More and more often the Japanese know less about kanji I have heard. They also do not seem to practice it as often. Like in texting to name one example (I know it is no better here in the west but still) is like only romanji and katakana I hear.

@Aldemotte: Given that kanji aren't even native to Japan, I'm not sure it's THAT much of a surprise. I think every other place that hanzi were imported to (Korea, Vietnam) has moved away to some degree from them. In fact, Vietnam COMPLETELY abjured hanzi.

EDIT: ...Wait a minute. Katakana? No hiragana? I can understand kanji being a nettle, but hiragana?

I am pretty sure they use hiragana as well come to think of it.

But kanji is still a part of their language isnt it? I know it is not originated from them but it plays a huge part in their language system dosent it?

I heard that one time they were thinking of doing away with the japanese language completely and replacing it with english or something. That would be horrible.

Ah, poor Kogasa-san! Next time you get to come overseas, we'll have to interact with you in English some more. You can do it, just channel your ability to surprise people, and surprise yourself by suddenly knowing English!
