On April, 04, 2013 The author of Zero no Tsukaima's Novels (Yamaguchi-Noboru) passed away from cancer (age 41). This is the reason why the novel series was stopped for 2 years, ever since volume 20.
This piece is suppose to be a goodbye/thank you gift for him.
Yamaguchi Noboru is considered somewhat of a pioneer for light novel authors, as he gave a template for the "small tsundere girl who uses violence" archtype (or at least made it well known enough for others' works). He is also known for the popularity of his male characters, something rare in the harem genre.
