    The actual Russian proverb is "Щи да каша - пища наша!" (Shchi and kasha, that's our food!")

    What's actually implied is "Shchi and kasha, that's our (only) food", so the meaning of the proverb is "No problem if it's humble cuisine, at least I get something to eat." The modern use-case for it would be when you're at your friend's place and they say: "Wanna grab a bite? There's nothing but instant noodles and cheap beer, tho..."
