To elaborate on darue's explanation (and 2 years late, at that), the big ones are all Level 7 beasties that can banish 2 monsters (that're Dragon-type or match their attribute) from hand or Graveyard to Special Summon themselves from hand or Graveyard, but will bounce themselves when your opponent's turn ends if they were Special Summoned, can be discarded along with a monster of their attribute to activate a particular effect (Blaster, the FIRE one, destroys a card; Tidal, the WATER one, sends a monster from your Deck to the Graveyard; Tempest, the WIND one, fetches a Dragon-type monster from deck to hand; and Redox, the EARTH one, revives a Monster), and if they themselves are banished they'll fetch you a Dragon of their attribute from-hand to-deck.

They can only use one of these four effects per turn, though (even the bounce-themselves is an effect rather than a lingering issue of their self-summon).

The little ones, on the other hand, all have the same sort of singular effect: Discard them and another monster (that's Dragon-type or matches their attribute) from your hand, and you fetch the big version clean out of your Deck to the field. They're also on their own you-can-only-use-one-of-these-effects-a-turn sorta clause, but considering in so doing they actually set up the easy summon of a second Dragon Ruler (meaning the deck could very quickly and easily make Rank 7 Xyz like Big Eye and Dracossack) . . . it's no wonder they in short order got hit with the banlist stick.

Nowadays, however, at the time of posting, the deck as we knew it is dead -- the baby versions are all at 3, but Blaster, Redox, Tempest, and Tidal are all banned (and we likely have Number 95 to thank for this; he was due to BREAK them to hell and back); prior to this, however, their presence off the banlist led to a good few cards like Super-Rejuvenation, Sacred Sword of Seven Stars, and even the Dragunities' "Dragon Ravine" being banned, limited, or semi-limited (and Super-Rejuv still is, but the Ravine's been creeping off the banlist, giving Dragunity some hope of a return).

tl;dr, it was a bunch of big, easy-to-summon monsters making Rank 7 hefties like a short-order cook does flapjacks.
