Im not familiar with ship designs but the things in their headbands are radar modules probably after all they are personified japanese battlecruisers dont ask why

Regardless of what they are, it does appear to be foreshortening errors. The shapes somehow didn't stay the same when they're angled instead of viewed head-on...

Well, the Kongo-class warships were actually modernized into battleships a bit after their construction.

In the vaguest sense of the word perhaps, they pretty much just added a poultry bit of deck armor that made zero difference against any threat weapon and then changed the name. The utter ineffectiveness of this was made abundantly clear in the Solomons when Hiei was crippled by mere cruiser caliber gunfire which then directly lead to her death by follow up air attack. Kirishima then showed it off again by trying stand up to real battleships at close range. Her guns managed to utterly fail to penetrate South Dakota which also shrugged off focused cruiser and destroyer fire and was never in danger of sinking, as a proper battleship should be. Kirishima was then summarily butchered by Washington with a handful of 16 inch hits that damn near went in one side of her and out the other.
